Moving Seniors – A Checklist for Choosing Your Senior’s New Home

by: Tehila Mörtl

Given our previous discussion on the different types of housing available, I would like to offer a checklist of considerations for moving seniors into a new home.

What Type of Senior Housing Best Meets Your Elders Needs?

Senior Move Checklist

To select the housing which best meets your elder’s needs, we must ask such questions as:  What is of most importance to them?  What should you and your senior look for and what are their expectations?  In addition, you will also want to take into consideration what their future needs might be when creating moving seniors checklist.

What is most important in regards to location?

On a scale of 1 to 5 with the most important beginning at 1, rate the following in regards to proximity in the first column:

____   ____          Public Transportation

____   ____          Shopping

____   ____          Place of Worship

____   ____          Family/Children

____   ____          Friends

____   ____          Senior Citizen’s Center

____   ____          Community Activities

____   ____          Movie Theater

____   ____          Cultural Events

____   ____          Parks or Walking Paths

____   ____          Medical Providers and Facilities

____   ____          City Living

____   ____          Suburban Environment

Once the importance of each item is reviewed, return to the moving seniors list and select the five (5) most important places of proximity, rating each in order of importance, 1 to 5, in the second column.  While it will be necessary to compromise on various selections, keep in mind the five top priorities when assessing each housing community.

What features and services does your elder prefer and/or require?

Please check all that he or she finds pertinent:

____                       Personal assistance (i.e. medication, personal care, housekeeping)

____                       24/7 emergency assistance

____                       All meals provided

____                       Some meals provided

____                       Use of kitchen facilities

____                       Cable television

____                       Internet connection

____                       Weekly housekeeping

____                       Parking

____                       Transportation to medical appointments and/or shopping

____                       Availability of nearby public transportation (buses)

____                       Exercise program, entertainment and/or social activities on site

____                       Prearranged activities and trips (i.e. senior center events)

____                       Home-like setting with a family like atmosphere

____                       Larger community setting

____                       Single story development

____                       High-rise construction
